It continues an investigation that is as old as computer science itself. It's a question that matters to all of us: despite computers getting smarter and smarter, why is it that we, as a group, often struggle to solve complex problems together, even when we share a deep concern about the outcome? Our hypothesis is that it's not because people aren't smart enough. We think it's because the tools and structures around us were never designed to think and decide together as a group. Instead they have been created with the individual in mind. This is a study about how we can change that. Smartup0 is the 1st experiment of the Timeline0.org research programme into collective IQ. We build ONLIFE—an emergency communication network when all others fail—while every governance decision, task, and transaction is logged and measured. How can socio-technical systems augment the Collective IQ of communities working toward a shared mission?

Currently this program has two dimensions:

  1. Theory — A thesis laying out the Smartup Hypothesis and how we suggest to prove or disprove it.
  2. Practice — Smartup Zero, a real community running the experiment that is testing the Smartup theory for the first time, right now
