I think part of the problem why people have "bad reasons" for owning a car is just our general capitalist culture. If you need a thing sometimes, or even might need it sometimes... you gotta own it. Or at least that seems to be the mentality. Instead of borrowing/renting.

Greetings from Germany. In most places here you still need a car realistically. Sure, you could wait for that bus that comes every 2hrs to do groceries... But maybe you also have a life. Way more viable in cities (I don't own a car). But even here, if you get a bit just a bit further out public transit becomes way more sparse. Nvm getting anywhere on a Sunday morning or for a night shift. And cycling... uhhh, really depends on the area. But also, Germany has a massive car culture (think of all the car companies from here). Even if people don't need a car, they often still have one. It's just "normal", and potentially a status symbol. Anyone who doesn't own a car (let along doesn't have a license) is seen as weird by a lot of people. (And imo, peer pressure or showing off is one of the worst reasons to own a car lol)

Even owning a car can be a problem, cause you need to park it somewhere. That's a lot of space just for storing some metal. Might be fine if you have a garage built under your house, so there's not a lot of extra space wasted. (Although that garage could be an extra room, or even a full small apartment... that's a lotta energy that went into building those walls, just to store some metal.) Here a lot of the older buildings don't have garages, street parking is legal but often full. So cars are blocking the side walks, bike paths, and often even the streets (which blocks emergency vehicles).
